PURPOSE
This position is to assist the classroom teachers in providing appropriate education for students with disabilities. This person reinforces education concepts and skills, assists with the planning process, discipline, and monitoring of students’ progress. This person will assist with self-care tasks such as toileting, personal belongings, assisting with snack.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Providing individual and small group educational support under the supervision of teachers and administrative staff.
- Providing direct caregiving services (i.e. feeding, toileting, personal care) under the supervision of teachers and staff.
- Adapting instructional programming under the direction of the teacher to fit the individual needs of the students.
- Reinforcing classroom management as directed by the teacher.
- Supervising students in non-classroom settings such as lunchroom, playground supervision, bus arrival and dismissal.
- Monitoring compliance with IEPs and other student management systems.
- Maintaining confidentiality of information about students and employees.
- Participating in appropriate in-service training.
- Maintaining attendance standards as specified by district guidelines.
Perform other duties as necessary to support the mission and vision of Columbia Public School District.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports To: IA/Para Supervisor, Building Principal, Assistant Principal, Classroom teacher.
Supervises: None
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum: Missouri substitute teaching certificate; 36+ college credit hours, or Associates degree, or 20-hour DESE sub course, or ParaPro assessment. Prior experience in a school setting and/or working with young people.
Preferred: Bachelor’s degree, Missouri teaching certificate, previous teaching experience, ability to work in a team teaching setting; A strong desire to teach and be responsible for instructing children as assigned.
Ideal candidate will have a professional and friendly demeanor with a demonstrated ability to work well with a variety of individuals in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Demands: Frequently stand, stoop, bend and kneel; Regularly physically assist students with feeding, self-care, and toilet tasks; Regularly lift students and assist them with movement; Must be able to lift 40 pounds; Demonstrate both close and distance vision; Speak and hear in an environment where numerous conversations and activities may be taking place simultaneously; Move around the classroom to interact with and manage students/groups of students; Read handwritten or printed material.
