PURPOSE

Columbia Public Schools is dedicated to providing an excellent education for all students. Assistant principal / athletic directors for secondary education serve students in grades 9-12. This position will support the principal in all areas of school administration with special emphasis given to student athletic activities. The athletic director will consistently lead the schools’ athletic program to achieve goals and meet the needs of all students.

 

This position is responsible for assisting in all areas of school administration including leading, coordinating and collaborating with students, parents, faculty and staff to ensure school - and district-wide goals are achieved, with particular focus on school athletics. This position is integral in cultivating and fostering an environment where students’ athletic and academic achievement, social and emotional development, civic engagement, and equitable opportunity is bolstered and enhanced through effective communication and leadership.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 

  • Lead and coordinate all extracurricular activities and MSHSAA activities.
  • Maintain compliance to all MSHSAA bylaws and policies.
  • Develop the scheduling of extracurricular activities.
  • Assist with recruiting, interviewing, screening and recommending qualified persons to fill openings for the extra-curricular athletics coaching staff.
  • Conduct periodic review and evaluation of the athletic program at the school, recommending or making changes as appropriate.
  • Coordinate the program of the school's interscholastic athletics.
  • Participate in the evaluation and recommendation of staff members assigned to the athletic program.
  • Assist the principal with teacher supervision and evaluation and provide instructional support.
  • Assist with supervision and monitoring of student transportation.
  • Communicate with parents and community regarding the promotion of the school and MSHSAA sports and activities.
  • Provide leadership and support for parent groups and booster clubs.
  • Assist in the management of facility operations and projects.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

 

Reports To:  Building Principal

Supervises:  Assists the principal in the supervision of the staff and student body

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum:  Master's Degree in School Administration; Principal Certificate; Evidence of successful experience as a classroom teacher.

Preferred:  Specialist or doctorate degree. Ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years successful classroom teaching experience and head coaching experience. Restorative Practices Training.

 

Ideal candidate will have a professional and friendly demeanor with a demonstrated ability to work well with a variety of individuals in a fast-paced environment. Ideal candidate will hold Restorative Practices Training Certification.

ADA REQUIREMENTS

 

Language: Present information to teachers, staff, other administrators, and boards. Respond to common questions and concerns. Interview students, staff, and teachers. Read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, memoranda, policies, administrative procedures, and statutes. Write business correspondence, including staff memoranda and newsletter articles. Keep information confidential when required by law, policy, or the nature of a particular situation.

 

Computation: Work with mathematical concepts, such as probability and statistical inference, and analyze data for instruction. Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

 

Reasoning: Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Solve a variety of problems in many different situations. Interpret instructions presented in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Demonstrate executive functions such as planning, organizing, remembering, and regulating information and behavior as they pertain to student performance and achievement.

 

Technology: Perform computer word processing (including spreadsheets) and Internet research. Access and create reports using the District’s student information software and databases Adhere to all District policies and procedures regarding technology use.

 

Physical demands: Frequently move in and around the building and grounds to visit classrooms, attend meetings, and supervise bus loading and unloading and also be able to sit for an hour or more at a time.  The position requires the ability to hear conversations in a noisy environment. Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position including attend Board meetings, student activities and events, and IEP meetings. Weekends or in evening hours is common.

 

Environmental conditions: The work environment is consistent with a typical office environment; however, they will occasionally be outside in temperatures below freezing and above 100 degrees. The individual who holds this position is frequently required to work irregular or extended hours.
