PURPOSE 

 

This position is for a teacher who will design and implement language instruction and intervention for students who are identified as English Leaners (EL). The focus will be Newcomer Math classes, following middle school math curriculum/standards. In addition, this teacher will provide support to EL students in English language development and in various content areas. The teacher will be expected to develop individualized educational plans for each EL student and develop and deliver group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines within all content areas. The teacher will work collaboratively with classroom teachers in a capacity that includes, but is not limited to, joining professional learning teams, helping differentiate instruction and assessment of EL students, and providing on-going support to classroom teachers as they implement EL strategies. The teacher will help administer the annual English proficiency test and will assist in the administration of all state and local assessments, as needed. The teacher must maintain all state and district required documentation on EL students and will serve as a liaison among the school, classroom teachers, parents/guardians of EL students, the district EL office, and district interpreters. This position may require travel among schools. While a portion of this position is focused on teaching math, it is part of the English Learners Department. Teachers in the EL Department are district teachers who are assigned to buildings based on the needs of EL students; therefore, building placement may change from year-to-year.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum: Appropriate academic preparation to be certified by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Certification:  Valid Missouri Teaching Certificate in appropriate content area (middle school math) and/or MO ESOL endorsement.

 

Preferred: Background in teaching middle school math. Prior teaching experience either at the elementary or secondary level preferred. Bilingual preferred. Familiarity with standardized tests, ability to analyze data, and experience with special education would be considered assets. Excellent computer skills required.  Knowledgeable in SIOP and/or other best practices for EL learning.

Conditions and Environment

The individual who holds this position will regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active.  Occasionally the individual will be required to work outdoors for short periods of time to perform such tasks as loading and unloading students from district transportation and supervising recess.
